Maria's First Day At Girls+Math Camp

July 20, 2015

We started today of with learning about the first notable female mathematician. Hypatia! She was a very different women because she lived in Athens, Ancient Greece. But... she was born in Egypt. She was murdered for being this different women in 415 A.D. Most of her works were burned along with the Library of Alexandria when Athens was invaded by the Arabs. Then we had Critical Thinking. For today it was you have a group of 3 and you guys get one sheet of paper, scissors, and a roll of tape.  Whoever got the highest free-standing building wins! If you won one of the professor's [beth] would buy the winners something from the vending machine. My team was Alex, Kia, and me :) We didn't win, Mallory, Ryann, and Abby did. There is an estimation thing where you have to estimate something mathematical everyday. Today we estimated the perimeter of a pennet. I guessed 60 inches. It was 73.5 inches and I didn't win. Elizabeth and Monkey  won with the guess of 76 inches. Then we did Venn Diagrams and we went on that sight...

Then we learned about all different kinds of sets. For example, Universal sets, Cardinal sets, and Subsets for the Universal sets. Then we played the game set which was soooo much.
